Cooperation with the Sambir region as part of the Institutional Catering Programme

October 24 2024

In October 2024, seven institutions in the Sambir district received over 4.8 tonnes of long-life food supplies as part of the UN World Food Programme’s Institutional Feeding Programme.

Three of the institutions that received the aid are located in Dobromyl. These are Dobromyl District Hospital, the Dobromyl City Council Social Services Centre, and Dobromyl Special Secondary Boarding School (Grades 1–2).

On 22 October, the head of the LAP, Ihor Vuytsyk, and monitoring officer Davyd Kravchenko visited these institutions as part of the monitoring programme.

The Dobromyl District Hospital serves the population of the entire local community. This is a remote mountainous region. The hospital’s director, Oksana Urbanovych, explained that charitable organisations rarely visit them, and the stable and regular supply of food from the Lviv Agrarian Chamber is a significant help to the hospital. “We are grateful to everyone involved in implementing this Programme, thanks to which we are able to provide improved nutrition to patients not just once, but throughout the whole year, as this also affects their health. We are therefore keen to continue our cooperation in the future and hope that the Institutional Catering Programme will continue next year as well,” noted Oksana Urbanovych.

The Dobromyl City Council Social Services Centre provides hot lunches to 25 internally displaced persons. The Centre’s director, Olga Syva, explained that in 2024, thanks to humanitarian aid, the institution was able to save over 25,000 hryvnias, which were used to pay for utilities, improve conditions for those in their care, and purchase fruit and vegetables.

Representatives of the monitoring group inspected the storage area, kitchen and dining hall, spoke with staff and received positive feedback on the quality of the food provided.

In Dobromyl, the monitoring group also visited Dobromyl City Council. Acting Mayor Olena Matsko spoke highly of the significant contribution to ensuring the functioning of the local authority’s public services and expressed her gratitude to the UN World Food Programme and the Lviv Agrarian Chamber for their assistance.

Ms Matsko explained that over 200 people had recently been relocated to Dobromyl from frontline regions. “We are currently working on settling them in. We will also be in great need of food aid, as these people have arrived with no means of support. We must find resources to help these people, and here the Institutional Food Programme can be a reliable source of basic food supplies for internally displaced persons. Therefore, we sincerely hope that our cooperation will only grow stronger, as together we are doing good work for people who find themselves in difficult circumstances,” noted Olena Matsko.

The Dobromyl Special Secondary Boarding School (Grades 1–2) is a unique institution. It provides education and accommodation for 140 children with psychophysical developmental delays, orphans, children deprived of parental care, and children from large and low-income families. Thanks to their participation in the Institutional Catering Programme, the children receive improved nutrition, which has a positive impact on their quality of life.

Members of the monitoring group met with the teaching staff, explained the aims and objectives of the Programme, and inspected the storeroom, kitchen and dining hall. The school’s director, Volodymyr Mul, thanked all the partners and expressed his desire to continue the collaboration, as the children are satisfied with the food and it is beneficial for their development.
