Monitoring mission in Lviv

September 16 2024

The UN World Food Programme’s institutional feeding programme in the Lviv region covers 104 institutions and over 15,000 people receiving assistance. Seventeen of these institutions are located in the city of Lviv itself. On 11 September, three of these were visited by a monitoring group from the Lviv Agrarian Chamber, comprising the Chamber’s Chairman, Ihor Vuytsyk, and monitoring officer Davyd Kravchenko.

These are the Lviv Regional Infectious Diseases Clinical Hospital, the Lviv Regional Public Non-Profit Enterprise “Lviv Regional Clinical Hospital”, and the State Non-Profit Enterprise “Galicia Comprehensive Rehabilitation Centre”, which have been participating in the Institutional Catering Programme since the start of 2024 and provide hot meals to over 1,400 people every month.

At the Lviv Regional Clinical Hospital, the monitoring group inspected the storage facilities and the kitchen, and spoke with staff and those receiving assistance. Beneficiaries expressed their gratitude for the support and noted the high quality and variety of the meals they receive at the hospital.

“It is important that such cooperation allows the hospital not only to provide patients with high-quality and varied meals, but also to focus resources on other critically important needs,” noted Marta Puzych, a gastroenterologist at the regional hospital.

Andriy Orfin, Deputy Director of the Lviv Regional Infectious Diseases Clinical Hospital, also praised the Programme’s impact on the hospital’s operations. He said that thanks to the food provided by the World Food Programme, the hospital is not only improving the quality of patients’ meals but also able to redirect the saved funds to other needs. Mr Orfin emphasised the importance of continued participation in the Programme and noted that the Lviv Agrarian Chamber is a reliable partner.

“Knowing that we are guaranteed to receive a specific quantity of food every month, we can plan our expenditure and use the funds freed up to improve our institution’s facilities and purchase medical supplies. This is significant support, and we are sincerely grateful to the UN World Food Programme and the Lviv Agrarian Chamber for such effective and timely assistance,” added Andriy Orfin.

To conclude the visit, the monitoring group visited the ‘Galicia’ Comprehensive Rehabilitation Centre. Representatives of the Lviv Agrarian Chamber inspected the kitchen facilities, spoke with kitchen staff about the quality and variety of food, and held a meeting with the Centre’s director, Hryhorii Dunas, who spoke in detail about the institution’s activities and its role in providing assistance to people in need of rehabilitation. “The Centre’s participation in the UN WFP Institutional Food Programme is a significant contribution to improving the quality of life and nutrition of those receiving assistance, as well as ensuring the sustainable operation of institutions,” noted Hryhorii Dunas.
