Where to turn to protect your rights

December 28 2023

Ukrainian legislation protects consumers’ rights, and explains where exactly to turn to for protection of those rights in various situations. This information is provided by the State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection.

– If a seller does not use a cash register, the consumer may lodge a complaint with the State Tax Service, which, despite the introduction of martial law, is currently authorised to carry out inspections and impose fines on businesses.

– Complaints regarding product labelling in a foreign language rather than the state language, as required by law, can be submitted to the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language. A special form is available on the Commissioner’s official website for this purpose.

– Complaints regarding financial services should be addressed to the National Bank of Ukraine, specifically to the Department for the Protection of Financial Services Consumers. Complaints can also be submitted online.

– For advice and clarification regarding violations of consumer rights when purchasing goods, warranty repairs and warranty servicing, or the provision of services, please contact the State Service for Food Safety and Consumer Protection and its regional offices.

At the same time, to protect your legal rights, you may take the matter to court. In accordance with Part 3 of Article 22 of the Law of Ukraine On the Protection of Consumer Rights, consumers are exempt from paying court fees for claims relating to the violation of their rights. This is now common practice in European countries.
