Bioeconomy vs Hogweed: New Solutions for Sustainable Agricultural Sector Discussed in Lviv

November 14 2025

On November 14, 2025, a constructive meeting between specialists in the agrarian and environmental spheres took place in the office of the Lviv Agrarian Chamber. Innovations for small farmers were discussed. The participants of the meeting were: Professor Myroslav Malvany – coordinator of the international project “Center of Excellence for Smart Agriculture and Circular Bioeconomy for a Sustainable Agricultural Sector in Expansion Countries (and beyond)” Ihor Vuytsyk – Project Manager “Protection of Biodiversity of Transboundary Territories of Ukraine and Poland from Invasive Populations of Borage (Heracleum)”, agricultural expert advisor. The discussion was attended by Zenoviy Bermes – president of the Association of Employers of the Lviv Region and a group of developers of modular biogas plants of the new generation for small farms, experts in the implementation of biogas technologies Mykola Koval and Serhii Filippov.

The key topic of the discussion was the use of the biomass of the destroyed Sosnovsky borscht – an invasive plant that is planned to be eliminated on an area of 1000 hectares in 9 communities of the Carpathian region within two years. The participants discussed the possibility of converting this biomass into biogas through anaerobic fermentation, which, with the help of a cogeneration module, can generate electricity for autonomous heating and lighting of industrial premises and community areas.

In addition to energy, the biogas plant produces digestate, an organic fertilizer that can be used as compost to restore soil fertility. The biofermenter with a volume of 60 m3 provides processing of up to 20 m3 of biomass from borschtovichi.

One cycle of fermentation lasts 30 days. During processing, up to 120 cubic meters of biogas per day (3600 cubic meters per month) and 45 cubic meters of high-quality digestate will be obtained. This solution combines an ecological component with improving the quality of life in rural areas.

Ihor Vuytsyk emphasized that the current meeting will promote the exchange of experience, interesting ideas and will be a guarantee for the creation of new joint projects.

Our meeting is an example of successful cross-sectoral cooperation – between science, agricultural practice, technological developers and local communities. The implementation of such solutions will allow: to reduce the negative impact on the environment, to save resources, to create new models of the biocircular economy in the agricultural sector.
