As part of the social project ‘Bread for Peace in Ukraine’, representatives of farms in the Lviv region received humanitarian aid in the form of seeds at the experimental field of the Institute of Agriculture of the Carpathian Region in the village of Stavchany, Obroshynska territorial community, Lviv district.
Humanitarian aid was provided to 80 small businesses, including the distribution of 38.5 tonnes of first-generation winter wheat seeds and 2.625 tonnes of mixed grass seeds, totalling over 800,000 UAH. The seeds were supplied by the Institute of Agriculture of the Carpathian Region of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences
The social project ‘Bread for Peace in Ukraine’ is being implemented in the Lviv region by the Pausa Café Social Cooperative (Italy) in partnership with the Lviv Regional State Administration and the Lviv Agrarian Chamber, and is aimed at supporting small-scale agricultural producers who cultivate small plots of land and are engaged in livestock farming, as well as the cultivation of cereals and vegetables.
“We are sincerely grateful to our Italian partners for their understanding of the challenges facing Ukraine’s agricultural sector following the full-scale invasion and for providing support to our businesses for the second year running. Blocked ports in the south of the country and export restrictions at the western border have had an extremely negative impact on the incomes of Ukrainian farmers. Small businesses have been particularly hard hit; for them, humanitarian aid in the form of seeds is now of the utmost importance,” emphasised Yuriy Buchko, Deputy Head of the Lviv Regional State Administration.
Additionally:
As a reminder, in October 2022, as part of the ‘Bread for Peace in Ukraine’ initiative, 28 tonnes of winter wheat seeds were distributed among 72 small farms and family farmers, comprising the ETANA variety (Germany, DSV), the TOBAK (Germany, Zaten-Union GmbH) and 2.5 tonnes of a mixture of five types of grass were distributed among 72 small farms and family farmers. Also in 2022, as part of the project, 44 tonnes of wheat grain and 3.5 tonnes of rye flour were purchased from the ‘Gerusa V. G.’ farm. The wheat was milled into flour in Italy, in the city of Alessandria, using facilities within correctional institutions (as a social enterprise). The products produced – flour, grissini and bread ‘for Peace in Ukraine’ – were sold at Novacoop outlets in the Piedmont region. From every product sold, 30 euro cents were allocated to support small Ukrainian farmers.
