In 2023, the Lviv Agrarian Chamber implemented a large-scale humanitarian initiative in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The initiative was aimed at supporting residents of rural areas in the Lviv region, internally displaced persons, and families affected by the full-scale military invasion of the Russian Federation.

The project aimed to improve food security for households that had access to land, kept pigs and poultry, but needed assistance to continue their agricultural activities.

Distribution of feed in 31 communities in Lviv region

As part of the “Distribution of feed for domestic animals and poultry” component, the Lviv Agrarian Chamber, as the implementing partner, provided logistics, coordination, and organization of feed distribution in 31 communities in the region.

During March–April 2023, thousands of households received feed, including those in the communities of Rudkivska, Novoyarychivska, Zhovtanetska, Hlynanska, Rava-Ruska, Sokal, Mostyska, Shehynivska, Velykomostivska, and others.

Each household received balanced feed kits for chickens and pigs, which helped to maintain production, reduce animal maintenance costs, and provide families with food during the difficult period of martial law.

The process was organized in close cooperation with local councils, village heads, representatives of social services, and officials from the Lviv Agrarian Chamber, who ensured transparency and efficiency in the distribution.

Voucher program to support rural households

A separate component of the cooperation was voucher support in 11 territorial communities of Lviv region. Beneficiaries — internally displaced persons, families that have taken in IDPs, low-income households, and families affected by the war — received vouchers worth UAH 12,000 each.

The vouchers provided the opportunity to purchase:

• agricultural equipment,
  
  
• tools and equipment,
  
  
• building materials,
  
  
• goods for gardening,
  
  
• power tools and hand tools,
  
  
• protective equipment and other necessary accessories.
  
  

The vouchers were distributed in Mostyska, Yavoriv, Zhydachiv, Radekhiv, and other communities. In total, hundreds of families received support, and the implementation of the program contributed to the restoration of local economic activity and strengthened the ability of households to provide themselves with food.

Community support and local interaction

Cooperation with local authorities played an important role in the implementation of the project. City and village councils actively participated in:

• compiling lists of beneficiaries,
  
  
• organizing places for distributing food and vouchers,
  
  
• logistics and communication with the public.
  
  

In many communities, the work was characterized by a particularly high level of organization, which allowed for quick, safe, and efficient distribution.

The cooperation provided significant support to households that lost their sources of income or the ability to maintain stable production due to the war. Providing food and access to essential goods helped families:

• continue to raise animals,
  
  
• provide oneself with food,
  
  
• reduce the financial burden,
  
  
• preserve productive potential in rural areas.
  
  

The project was successfully completed and covered significant areas of the Lviv region, becoming one of the largest humanitarian initiatives in the field of agricultural support in the region.
