On 23 October, <\/span>the annual WFP partner consultation <\/span>took place <\/span>in Rome, Italy<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

David Kravchenko<\/span>, <\/span>Protection and Monitoring Officer at<\/span> the Lviv Agrarian Chamber, <\/span>was invited to the session on combating sexual exploitation and abuse (SEA) as a representative of a Ukrainian organisation <\/span>that<\/span> successfully implements measures to combat SEA.<\/span><\/p>\n

The session was titled <\/span>\u2018PSEA <\/span>(Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse) in Action: More Than Just a Commitment!\u2019 This session highlighted the critical role of protection from sexual exploitation and abuse (<\/span>PSEA<\/span>) in humanitarian work. <\/span>The discussion emphasised the importance of embedding <\/span>PSEA <\/span>principles across all organisational functions, ensuring that protection is woven into every aspect of the work.<\/span><\/p>\n

Speakers included Natalia McDonald, Senior<\/span> PSEA<\/span> Adviser, WFP; Colin Rapno,<\/span> PSEAH<\/span> Manager, <\/span>CHS<\/span> Alliance<\/span>, a representative from Geneva; Josephine Hubba, Executive Director<\/span> of the Jireh<\/span> Doo<\/span> Foundation<\/span>, a representative from Nigeria; and Natalia Peankovska, Project Manager and<\/span> PSEA<\/span> Coordinator at <\/span>The<\/span> Union<\/span> of<\/span> Young<\/span> Roma<\/span>; \u201c<\/span>Tarna<\/span> Rom<\/span>\u201d; a representative from Moldova.<\/span><\/p>\n

The LAP representative spoke about the experience of conducting <\/span>PSEA <\/span>training and information sessions for humanitarian workers and aid recipients, and their significance for the organisation. \u00a0\u201cThese training sessions ensure that staff and those we serve are well informed about <\/span>PSEA <\/span>principles, reporting mechanisms and their rights to access free support,\u201d noted David Kravchenko.<\/span><\/p>\n

David also emphasised the key role of implementing effective mechanisms that ensure the organisation\u2019s <\/span>PSEA <\/span>commitments are met. \u201cThese mechanisms not only formalise commitments but also embed <\/span>PSEA <\/span>principles into the organisation\u2019s core values and daily operations, fostering a culture of accountability and safety. It is important to note that in our organisation, we constantly ensure that all staff, regardless of their roles and functions, are well-trained and informed about <\/span>PSEA<\/span>. This is extremely important because very often, when we think about <\/span>PSEA<\/span>, we focus on service delivery, whereas in reality <\/span>PSEA<\/span> must be integrated into all functions of the organisation, including human resources management mechanisms, vendor and subcontractor vetting processes, procurement procedures, and so on,\u201d added David Kravchenko<\/span><\/p>\n

In his report, the Monitoring and Protection Officer also highlighted areas where improvements could be made regarding <\/span>PSEA<\/span>: \u201cWhat I wish to emphasise through my address today is the need to develop a strategy that empowers partner organisations \u2013 particularly smaller ones \u2013 to assist with investigations and to provide support and assistance to victims of sexual exploitation and abuse. Currently, the Lviv Agrarian Chamber is working in this context to identify partners or organisations that can provide services to investigate cases of sexual and gender-based violence. In our view, the mechanism for involving external institutions will enable organisations, regardless of their size, to better fulfil their obligations to assist victims of SEN and to act with greater accountability,\u201d concluded Davyd Kravchenko.
